In 1842, two German artists living and working in Trieste, August Tischbein and August Selb, decide, mesmerized the beauty of the Austrian coast, travel through it and bring it closer to the Austrian readership by publishing a collection of illustrations created during the trip. They began their painting journey at the beginning of June 1842 in Oglej and then visited Devin, Trieste, Milje, Kopar, Piran, Poreč, Pazin, Svetvinčenat, Rovinj, Vodnjan, Pula, Labin, Volosko, Krk, Cres and Lošinj, where they ended their journey. At the same time, they drew views of cities and castles, landscapes with ancient monuments, portraits of people. Upon their return to Trieste, they handed over the collected material to the historian Pietro Kandler, who then wrote accompanying notes. The comparative German translation is the work of Jakob Löwenthal (Leszno, 1807 - Vienna, 1882), a well-known writer and journalist from Trieste. Lithographs and accompanying notes contrast and compare the city and the countryside, the dry coastal areas and the impressive hilly interior of Istria, different languages, mentalities and living conditions. Full-page color map of the Carta del Litorale Austriaco between sheets 3.4 and 4.
Anton August Tischbein (Rostock, 9 October 1805 - Trieste, after 1867) - German painter. According to Nagler, he began his art education in Kassel, while Thieme Becker Vollmer believes that he began his education in 1824 in Berlin and continued it in 1826 in Dresden. In January 1833, he came to Munich, where he perfected his skills in portraiture and genre painting. During that period, he often traveled to Italy, stopping briefly in Trieste on the way, where he married Teresa Skwor on January 15, 1839. For the Trieste publisher Giovanni Moll, he created a series of drawings on the theme of Trieste customs, which were a great success. In 1842, he exhibited for the first time in Vienna, at the annual exhibition of the Imperial-Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Between 1840 and 1848, he exhibited as many as 16 paintings at the exhibition of the Trieste Society of Fine Arts, for which he also commissioned several lithographs for which its members were awarded. He also exhibits elsewhere and creates other lithographs of Trieste and other places. / August Selb (Munich, February 9, 1812 or 1813 - Munich, November 1, 1859) - German painter. Son of the Bavarian artist Josef Anton Selb. He closely followed his father's work and became an excellent lithographer. For some time he lived in Trieste, where in 1840 and 1841 he made several lithographs for the Trieste Society of Fine Arts. In 1842, it appears in the catalog of the exhibition in the Vienna St. Ani. Despite this, there is little news about him and he is hardly mentioned in biographical lexicons. / Pietro Kandler (Trieste, 23 May 1804 - Trieste, 18 January 1872) - Italian historian and archaeologist. Attended high school in Koper, studied law in Padua, Vienna and Pavia. From 1842 he held the office of the city procurator of Trieste. He simultaneously dealt with the archeology and history of Istria and Trieste. He was an honorary member of the Society for Yugoslav History and Antiquities in Zagreb. The historical and political environment of Trieste considered him an Austrophile and an opponent of irredentism, so he spent the end of his life in intellectual isolation, and only contemporary Italian historiography recognized him as an objective collector of various materials about Istria and Trieste.
