Summary

Ross Harrison: Democracy

Ross Harrison's book Democracy can be defined as a historical-theoretical study that provides philosophical insight into the study of democracy. Relying on historical facts and the vast knowledge of famous theorists, in the first part of the book, the author deals with the possible meanings of the word democracy, and then considers the dilemmas and reservations related to democracy, which have occupied great thinkers from ancient times to the present day.
Going further into the values and evaluations of democracy, Harrison asked himself whether democracy provides the central goods that would establish it as a value, and he cites knowledge, autonomy and equality as the basic goods. The complexity of the mutual relations between democracy and these values is the source of numerous problems and conflicts, and the author rightly concludes that the defense of democracy is both challenging and painful.
