Most of the contributions in this book focus on Bulgaria, a Balkan country that has meanwhile been a member of the EU for five years. These contributions are partly the result of joint research with colleagues in Eastern and Southeastern Europe, and they concern - explicitly or implicitly - other post-socialist countries as well. These researches are directed less towards the "picturesque" aspects of folk culture, and more towards those aspects of its rapid change which are related to everyday life and the problems that arise there.
