China is a rising nuclear superpower and the main reason for the Western focus on the Asia-Pacific region. This makes that country extremely important for scientific analysis, and the topic of this book is scientifically relevant, not only in Croatian, but also in the world academic scale. The development of contemporary Chinese foreign policy thought refers to the historical account of complex and interrelated political, social and economic processes that influenced the creation, shaping, formulation and implementation of the fundamental principles of action, building foreign relations, political consensus and worldview on external interests and the vision of international relations of the People's Republic of China. The reason for such a complex definition of the topic of this book lies in the expressed peculiarity of China's relationship not only towards the international community but also towards the "world" in general, which strongly influenced and continues to influence the formation of principles and management of Chinese foreign policy. There are few countries that can say that they are a global superpower, an influential world economy, a multi-thousand-year-old culture and a civilization of their own, and there are even fewer countries whose contemporary foreign policy and diplomacy are actively influenced by all these factors. In this sense, the thematization of the development of Chinese foreign policy thought serves as a didactic and methodological starting point for the academic and professional study of "diplomatic history", "history of foreign relations" and "foreign policy development" of the People's Republic of China. The main thematic undertaking of this book therefore, in short, runs parallel to the approaches mentioned above, but also stands out in that it tries to summarize their overall contribution to China's foreign policy situation in a particular period. The existing professional literature on the "diplomatic history" of the People's Republic of China provides a reviewed and comprehensive insight into the processes of interaction and resolution of bilateral and multilateral issues of "official" China with other states and international organizations. Many accounts of the history of China's foreign relations, regardless of their high level of expertise, usefulness and overall quality, are too often underlined by a strong ideological, national or other bias. Abundant literature in English written by American authors is, for understandable reasons, often written "in the shadow" of the bilateral perspective of relations between the United States and China, and as such can serve as a "weight" for understanding the entirety of Chinese foreign relations.
