Summary
Oliver Otis Howard: Isabel of Castile
In almost every detail, Isabel corresponds to the ideal of a queen. Her peaceful nature, a virtue which ancient peoples considered the attribute of the gods, endowed her with a majesty greater than that which royal descent carries with it. Her steadfastness and patience were magnificent. Her understanding of the responsibilities of government was of the kind that only the greatest rulers could boast of. Her courage in all conditions remained unwavering. History, as we see, remembers vivid circumstances in which, when she judged that her presence was necessary, she appeared unannounced almost alone in the midst of an enraged crowd and managed to calm the quarrels without fear or favor for either party. Her poise was of that noble, nature. She longed for victory but not for revenge.
There was never a case where an adviser laughed at her opinion, just as there was never a case where the Spaniards doubted her word. Her fame has never been touched by a scandal for a moment.
