Summary
Jacques Le Goff: The Origin of Purgatory
In the heated debates between Protestants and Catholics in the 16th century, supporters of the Reformation harshly transferred their opponents' belief in purgatory, which Luther called the "third place". That fictional "that" world did not exist in the Holy Scriptures. I intend to trace the centuries-old creation of that third place, starting with ancient Judeo-Christianity, in order to show its emergence at the time of the flourishing of the medieval West in the second half of the 12th century and its rapid success in the following century. Finally, I will try to explain why it is closely related to that important moment in the history of Christianity and how it significantly influences the acceptance - or non-acceptance of heretics - in the new society, resulting from the miraculous momentum of two and a half centuries after the millennium.
