It seems to me that all those who have dealt with the essay in one way or another (and there are few if we believe the essayist Sreten Marić) agree on one thing: the essay as a genre is very difficult to define. In efforts to determine its key features, structural characteristics and function - as a form, that is, a genre or a type, almost without exception the obstacle of its "vagueness" and "elusiveness" was encountered. That "which does not stand up to any law, not even the law of genre" is mainly observed as a consequence of two observed features of the essay: its subjectivity and hybridity. Even the existence of the "essayist's form" as such is called into question: paradoxically speaking of the form of the essay "which requires a self-conscious formlessness", of the form as "neutrality" which is not presented to the author as a task but as a challenge to freedom.
