Summary
David Nicolle: The Roman-Byzantine Army from the 4th to the 9th Century
The Byzantine Empire was a continuation of the Roman Empire and faced similar military problems, however, the solutions were different. In North Africa, for example, numerous Roman armies concentrated on protecting the main roads and urban centers. The smaller Byzantine army built a large number of fortifications and took a defensive position. The most significant feature of late Byzantine military strategy was the theme, the system of provincial armies, which had no similarities with the old Roman tradition. With many illustrations, David Nicolle explores the history of Roman-Byzantine armies from the 4th to the 9th century.
