Everyday life and traditions of the Russian nobility (XVIII century - beginning of the XIX century)" is the last book of Yuri Mihajlovich Lotman (1922–1993), a great Russian scientist and one of the founders of the Tartu Moscow School of Semiotics. Among the works of J.M. Lotman, this book stands out today as his most popular work by topic, a key part of his oeuvre. According to Lotman, Russian classics cannot be fully understood without knowing the context, that is, the environment in which it was created. In this case, it is the Russian nobility of the 18th - early 19th centuries. In his book, Lotman reconstructs that period, which is already distant from us historically, and writes about different aspects of the everyday life of the Russian nobility: ranks, female education, courtship, dandyism, card-playing, duels, dying...
