Bosna i Hercegovina: Neka usputna lutanja 1910

Holbach Maude

Summary

Maude M. Holbach: Bosnia and Herzegovina: Some Incidental Wanderings 1910

Due to the aesthetic and literary elements of the travelogue, given Holbach's multi-layered orientalist view of Bosnia, which is also imbued with Balkanism, this work makes it distinctive and intriguing. Also, due to the author's desire to remain apolitical, and to present Bosnia's tourist potential, as well as its "progress" under Austro-Hungarian rule, numerous everyday elements that are rarely seen in travelogues are directly observed, so Holbach lists numerous tourist attractions, but also other accompanying infrastructure elements that facilitate tourist trips, such as locations of summer resorts with a 'pleasant view', restaurants in cities with the best food, the best and cheapest hotels and others similar data. With the help of this travelogue, we get another view, namely a picture of Austria-Hungary's relationship with Bosnia. Apparently reading the Monarchy's attempts to influence Holbach and prevent her from writing about politics and daily events during the annexation crisis. This is already visible in the very act of allowing the author to visit the regions that were on the verge of an uprising, specifically Sandžak, while she is forbidden to write about the events in a certain way. In doing so, they showed a desire to provide selective information that speaks in favor of their actions in Bosnia, ignoring political events and crises that took place not only in Bosnia, but also in the whole of Europe, which formed a complex mosaic of European politics, one significant part of which takes place precisely in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which will greatly contribute to the cause of the First World War. Consequently, "Neka usputna lutanja", although at first glance it looks like a "standard" travelogue, nevertheless provides a multi-layered view of a complex process and a turbulent period of Bosnia and Herzegovina's past.
