Ekonomska istorija graničarskog Srema 1745-1914
Summary
Snežana Aleksić: Economic history of the border region of Srem 1745-1914
On the occasion of 150 years since the development of the military border in Srem 1873–2023
Snežana Aleksić managed to clarify this rather unusual historical topic, which was the subject of her careful and patient study, from a historical and economic point of view in a very meaningful and scientifically relevant way. In several chapters, she managed to show the political and economic status of the Habsburg Monarchy in the context of Europe at the time, to present the Military Border, its economic and administrative system as a unique form of organization, primarily military, especially according to the then Ottoman Empire. She showed us the organization of the civil and military authorities, the way this area functions, as well as the economic, political and legal system in the Monarchy, talking among other things about the functioning of the Border at that time, which was dominated by household cooperatives, agriculture, animal husbandry, crafts, natural resources, the position of workers, traffic, trade, tax policy, financial institutions, then development, the collapse of border cooperatives, the state of agriculture, monetary policy, unemployment, traffic, trade, wages, living conditions, etc. All these representations are scientifically grounded and substantive, while particularly significant descriptive items are the appendices on the state and development of settlements in the area of the border region of Srem, which will certainly serve as important basic studies for researchers of these settlements.
