Summary

Ivo Perić: Croatian nationalistic thought in the 19th century. and 20th century

"The declaration of the Republic of Croatia as an independent and sovereign state in 1991 encouraged me as a historian to historiographically research and present the development of Croatian state-building thought up to that time. I considered it a sufficiently unexplored and interesting topic, for the research and treatment of which there is a scientific need. I also considered that this work in the new, unrestrained circumstances, which arose in 1990 after the introduction of political pluralism and democratic freedoms, can do as a whole. Earlier, for the totalitarian, communist regime, this work could not be done. Because the aspirations for an independent and sovereign Croatian state, which were advocated by Croatian emigration from 1945 to 1990, were a taboo subject in the eyes of the communist regime, since they were directed against the breaking up of the federal and of the socialist order in it, and as such, were treated as strictly punishable acts. Here, in that period, only obtaining, possessing and distributing books, brochures and newspapers, which were published by Croatian political emigration, made it possible, therefore, that this topic can be treated freely and completely, so that the author no longer needs to be afraid censorship, and not slavish self-censorship.

In Croatian scientific historiographical literature, as well as in Croatian historiographical journalism - when looking at the aspirations regarding the solution of the Croatian question in certain phases of the modern past - these aspirations are used for different, but in terms of their meaning, identical or approximately similar expressions: Croatian political thought, Croatian national thought, Croatian state-building thought. The goal of these aspirations was: nurturing and preserving Croatian national identity, the achievement of Croatian national and territorial integrity, the establishment of the widest possible range of autonomous powers and rights, and, finally, the realization of complete state independence and sovereignty. With the intention of showing the development of these aspirations, I titled this topic with the term: Croatian state-building thought, because it seems to me that such a title is the most adequate for this topic."
