Summary
Georg Iggers: From historicism to postmodernism
Selected historiographical essays
For several decades, the books of Georg G. Iggers have been of great importance in the field of historiography and have gained global recognition within the contemporary "ecumen of historians". In the book From Historicism to Postmodernism. Selected Historiographical Essays, edited by Michael Antolović, Iggers discusses the following issues: history and social action beyond national and continental borders; on rationality and history; about the role of professional historical science in the creation and distortion of memory; on the use and abuse of history and the responsibility of historians; on nationalism and historiography; about refugee historians from Nazi Germany and political attitudes towards democracy; on hermeneutic historicism, scientific positivism and Marxism in the 20th century; about the significance of Marxism for historical knowledge today as well as about the Marxist tradition of writing history in the West.
The editor of the book, Michael Antolović, decided to select works that will emphasize the relevance of Iggers's thinking and reveal his contribution to recent theoretical discussions, which are not limited only to historical science, but also involve the problems of philosophy and social theory.
