Samuel's state is a historical phenomenon that has always attracted the attention of not only professional historians but also the reading public and certain political circles. It is precisely this political dimension - which we can trace, if not earlier, then certainly from the Berlin Congress (1878) - that sometimes obscured the objective historical truth. Therefore, Samuel's uprising and the state he created were written about as the uprising of the Balkan Slavs, as the Bulgarian Empire, or as the Macedonian Empire. This political dimension, present even in our time, is manifested in the relations between Bulgaria and North Macedonia. Modern Byzantology considers Samuel's empire as one of the stages in the history of the medieval Bulgarian state. In accordance with scientifically accepted estimates, and on the occasion of the thousandth anniversary of the Battle of Belasica (1014), the Bulgarian medievalist Georgi Nikolov wrote a study on Samuel. It is a book in which the dramatic story of a state that existed for four decades and successfully resisted the Byzantine Empire was presented in a vivid and convincing manner. We must not lose sight of the fact that, at that time, Byzantium was at the peak of its power and the most powerful in the then triangle of world powers (Holy Roman Empire - Arab Caliphate - Byzantium). Historical facts about thousands of blinded soldiers, about the martyrdom of its ruler and, finally, about its downfall, give a special note to Samuel's state.
