Summary
Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa: Gepard
THE NOVEL BASED ON VISCONTI'S FILM AND THE NETFLIX SERIES In the middle of the 19th century, Sicily experienced the twilight of the old and the beginning of the new world. Garibaldi's units contributed crucially to the disappearance of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and the eventual unification of Italy. In the history of this country, that moment is considered a turning point, but far from everyone being satisfied with it. In the center of the novel Cheetah, Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, based on family traditions, weaves a story about a defeated class of nobles who lost almost all importance due to the disappearance of the previous system. It is told from the perspective of Prince Fabrizio, who observes how the world around him is changing faster than he can imagine, but also understands what others have missed. Regimes are often not overthrown by coups and violently, but quietly, by the arrival of new people, agreements and the gradual disintegration of the old class. Gepard is a novel about the transience of power, but also about the dignified defeat of people who know that history rarely favors individual destinies. It is an elegy about the end of a world, told calmly and with a bitter smile of those who realize that their time has passed, even though they are still alive.
