Summary

Umberto Eco: How to recognize a fascist

Umberto Eco, one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century, shows in the essays collected in the book *How to recognize a fascist* that fascism is not only a long-vanquished ideology, but a set of fears and habits that reappear when society loses the ability to think critically. Starting from memories of his childhood spent under Mussolini's rule, Eco analyzes how an atmosphere of intolerance is created, but also how enemies are created and language is turned into a weapon. His famous essay "Eternal Fascism" breaks down the signs by which totalitarianism can be recognized even before it becomes obvious. In the remaining two essays, which are published for the first time in our language, the author presents a review of censorship in the modern era - similar to the fascist one - but also shows the possibilities of tolerance and ways to overcome totalitarianism. This book by Eco reminds us that freedom, once won, is not eternal, but something that must be constantly defended. Therefore, reading it today is not so much a history lesson as a guide to understanding the world we live in.
