Summary

Sun Bin: The Art of War

Sun Bin's The Art of War is considered a work not far behind Sun Tzu's much more famous military treatise. Like Sun Tzu's The Art of War, Sun Bin's work deals with military strategy, exposing the legality of the art of war, and ideas that are still relevant and applicable in war today. Also, the pearls of ancient Chinese wisdom flow through the book.

Sun Bin (died 316 BC) was a military strategist who lived during the Warring States period in ancient China. He is a descendant of Sun Tzu, and was taught military science by the hermit Gueiguci. He knew Sun Tzu's martial art by heart, so Gueiguci often pointed it out to other students. While serving in the Wei state, he was arrested on false charges of treason. As a punishment, his face was tattooed (that's how criminals were punished at the time) and his kneecaps were removed, which left him crippled for the rest of his life.

Sun Bin's work The Art of War was rediscovered by archaeological excavations in 1972, after being lost for almost 2000 years. Until then, some historians speculated that Sun Pin and Sun Tzu were one and the same person, but this discovery proved that Sun Pin was actually a descendant (grandson or great-grandson) of Sun Tzu.
