Fyodor Ščerbatski: Conception of Buddhist Nirvana

 

Fyodor Ipolitovič Ščerbatski (1866-1942), Indologist and buddhologist, published the book "Conception of Buddhist Nirvana" in 1927 and was the first to give a philosophical interpretation of nirvana and distinguish important changes in the formation of this concept in different periods history of Buddhism and in the different schools of Hinayana and Mahayana. The book demonstrated an approach to Buddhism as a constantly changing teaching that often contains conflicting categories and ideas within the framework of the same system.
