Summary
Charles Squire: Mythology of the Celts
They were tall, fair-haired, with blue or gray eyes, broad foreheads. They were called Celts. They belonged to the "Aryan" family. Their language was similar to Latin, Greek, Teutonic, Slavic, Zend of ancient Persians and Sanskrit of ancient India. Their original homeland is probably some area in Central Europe, upstream along the Danube or in the Alps. The round graves in which they buried their dead or placed their ashes differed from other graves of the earlier race.
The priests of the Celts are well known to us under the name «druids» - a word derived from the root «DR» which means wood, especially oak, in several Aryan languages. This is generally taken as evidence - though not accepted by all scholars - that they especially worshiped the king of trees. Mistletoe, a miraculous oak parasite, was prominent among their "plants of power" and played a major role in their rituals.
