Summary
Ugo Bardi: Before the collapse
A collapse is a rapid, uncontrolled, unexpected, complete collapse. Throughout history, economic crashes have been accompanied by the decline and disappearance of entire empires and civilizations. The human race also experienced breakdowns caused by famine and plague, and the same happened with the exploitation of mineral wealth, which led to the devastation of entire areas. Today, we are threatened with the collapse of the entire civilization, and perhaps the ecosystem on Earth, due to climate change and depletion of natural resources. And what actually causes collapses? Where does their unpredictability come from? Both modern science and ancient philosophy teach us that collapses are not a fault in the system, but a feature of our universe: they are entropy—the backbone of the second principle of thermodynamics—at work. But with so many reasons to fear, there is also good news: what seems to us to be doom can only be a transition to a new state, better than the previous one. Ugo Bardi offers a hand to guide us through the dark meanders of the collapse and proposes "Seneca's strategy" - the idea behind this solution is that one should not resist the heated course of events, because any resistance worsens the already started process, but carefully direct it so that the collapse is prevented or at least mitigated. One of the key moments of this strategy, however, is to avoid the accumulation of so much tension in the system that it has to be suddenly released at some point, causing the system to collapse.
