Pavličić Pavao

Summary

Pavao Pavličić: Nine Monuments

In the novel Nine Monuments, over a span of almost a hundred years, we follow two wealthy families in Varoš who compete over who will erect the most beautiful monument to local meritorious people; to the oldest poet, historiographer, architect, sculptor and art collector...

Chapters are titled with ordinal numbers (Prvi spomenik, Second spomenik...) and years (from 1903 to 1991) are attached to them. The last chapter (The Ninth Monument) remains without a year. The suffering continues, the period is not over. In the final part of the novel, faith in the monumentalist approach to history is shattered.

The third family is involved in everything. Unlike the two main ones, she is poor and a stonemason. Stands for monuments are made in her workshop. The family is a witness of both power and destruction.

Nine Monuments (first published in 2006) is at the same time the history of the City, and the national history in miniature, and a human commentary, and an image of the genre. Numerous family stories are examples of all possible reactions to history, images of all the diseases from which weak individuals can fall ill when they find themselves, against their will, in interesting times.

Lifelike characters and an exciting story - which we are already used to with Pavle Pavličić - as well as inspired evocations of the Danube landscape, promise the reader's pleasure.
