Tomasović Mirko

Summary

Mirko Tomasović: Miscellanea

Academician Mirko Tomasović (1938), a long-time university professor and one of the best translators of classical literature, from the first published book Comparative Records in 1976, to the last Discourses and Discussions (on the nature of Croatian pre-Renaissance heritage in 2012), has thirty-two scientific and professional titles. This author's latest book is the thirty-third in that series. But, if we include about fifteen books of poetry from the Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese languages, then it becomes clear that he is a tireless and meritorious scholar and translator. Professor Tomasović's total oeuvre is not only indispensable for the history of Croatian studies and comparative literature (as well as for the history of Croatian translated literature), but his research on Marulić and many other writers from older Croatian literature has brought forth many novelties, almost polemically opposing numerous earlier ones. It is therefore no surprise that this edition, for example, "Miroslav Krleža on Marko Marulić (and about dear Croatian writers)", in which he analyzes Krleža's judgments about Marulić, as well as numerous factual inaccuracies, is also found in many other Croatian writers, from humanism to baroque. "Opus magnati: Gaj's dictionary of Croatian language synonyms" deals with a separate book added to the first year of Danica, after its last issue from 1835. The book, called Zbirka... is actually the earliest synonym dictionary of the Croatian language. From this book, completely new conclusions can be drawn about Gaj's linguistic tolerance. The following are texts about Artur Cronia, Anti Tresić Pavičić, Milan Begović Nikolić, Nikola Milićević, Ivan Slamnig and Rafa Bogišić, etc. The chapters on the author's experiences translating Petrarca, Lusitanac, Tass, and Dante together with Tonko Maroević are particularly interesting and instructive.
