Summary

Slobodan Prosperov Novak: The History of Croatian Literature

From the Baščan Tablet to Today

The History of Croatian Literature' is a continuation of Vodnik's and Kombol's attempts to systematically review our literature. Therefore, Novak completely sets aside ossified divisions, and establishes the history of literature through a complex of historical and social circumstances. An important place was given to the first great writers who wrote in the vernacular and writers from the beginning of the 17th century in whose works the first signs of modern national consciousness appear. The novel is a broader treatment of literary movements in the last fifty years, which have not been sufficiently treated in our historical and theoretical literature. The author presented all important contemporary Croatian writers.
