Summary
Anđelko Badurina: The role of Franciscan monasteries in the urbanization of the Dubrovnik area
Although individual buildings and their architectural plastic have often been the subject of research by scientists of various profiles and interests, so far no one has dealt with the problem of monasteries on the Adriatic coast as a whole, and even less with the phenomenon of monasteries as a peculiar architectural task, determined, on the one hand, by a specific tradition of construction and, on the other hand, by the position of the Franciscan order in general social environments.
(...)
Starting from the Franciscan principle that monks are not separate from people, the task is to examine the social function and role that their monasteries had in a certain time and space, how much this function determines the basic form of the monastery (cloister) and, finally, what the presence of Franciscan monasteries specifically meant in the territory of the former Republic of Dubrovnik.
