1. volume: Croatian painting XIX. century
2. volume: Croatian painting at the turn of the 19th century. in the 20th century
Synthetic work about the "beginnings, emergence and maturation" of modern Croatian painting, from 1800 to 1914, from the predominant import and predominance of foreign masters to the Munich circle and the appearance of the Medulićians, which coincides with the maturation of Croatian society, from its fragmentation to self-awareness. It is the first systematic review of the artistic development and activities of individual protagonists of that significant painting period, which has not been adequately scientifically researched and adequately evaluated until now. Until the publication of this book, that period was known mainly in fragments, and with this panoramic view, Croatian painting of the 19th century. century comes to the fore and gets a well-deserved affirmation. It is an indicator of the necessary and useful Europeanization, but at the same time it is also an aspiration to bear witness to individual, local and national peculiarities. The text is accompanied by over 650 reproductions in color and black and white.
