Summary
Paul Ardenne: Contextual art
Artistic creation in an urban environment, in a situation, intervention, participation speaks of late modernism and contemporary artistic practices that deal with border areas and practices of researching the relationship between the subject and the world, more precisely: the context, the artist, the viewer. It is not about a new artistic direction or movement, but about a specific change in the artist's behavior towards work and action in the space and time of concrete life. The term "contextual art" refers to a set of forms of artistic expression that differ from a work of art in the traditional sense: art of intervention and engaged art of an activist character (events in public places, "maneuvers"), art that conquers urban space or landscape (street performances, landscape art in a certain situation...), aesthetics that is called participatory or active in the field of economy, media or spectacle. A contextual artist, above all, deals with reality, not with simulation, figurative description or the game of appearance in the media spaces of artistic presentation and expression.
