Cantelli da Vignolla: Il regno della Bossina - Map of Bosnia
The map of the Italian cartographer Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola: Ill regno della Bossina, diuso nelle sur Proinciae principali, which was created in Rome in 1689, is very important for us, and on which Bosnia and the northern part of Herzegovina were shown for the first time as independent provinces. Bosnia is divided into upper (Bossina superiore) and lower (Bossina inferiore), so this is the first regional map of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Despite its inaccuracy, it is the supreme achievement of cartography of that time.
Giacomo Cantell da Vignola (1643-1695) is one of the most important Italian cartographers of the 17th century. After studying in Bologna, he went to Paris where he collaborated with the greatest French cartographers of the time - Sanson, Du Val and Baudrand. From 1675, he lived permanently in Rome, working on his atlas "Mercurio Geografico", which came out in 1692 from the printing workshop of Giacomo de Rossi in Rome.
