Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667) is one of the most important French cartographers of the early modern century. He is the first French cartographer to hold the title of royal cartographer and is considered the founder of French national cartography. He is also one of the first French cartographers who also depicted Croatian lands. The first Sanson atlas appeared in 1654. Sanson's second and most famous atlas "Cartes generales de toutes les parties du monde" appeared in 1658. Already in 1664, the second edition of that atlas appeared.
