Summary
Giuseppe Rosaccio: Osero - Veduta Osora
Copper engraving
From the work: Viaggio da Venetia, a Costantinopoli : per mare, e per terra & insieme quello di Terra Santa, Venice, Giacomo Franco, 1598
The number of inhabitants in the city decreased during the 15th century, and it met the beginning of the 16th century with only 500 inhabitants. In this view, we see the narrowed scope of the city of Osor, the old cathedral outside the city walls, and the Franciscan monastery founded in 1465 in the area of Bijar.
It is based on a view made by Božo Bonifačić for Comocio's island in 1571, which served as a template for Rosaccio.
Giuseppe Rosaccio (ca. 1530-1620), Italian cosmographer who worked in Venice. His most famous works are "Teatro del Cielo e Terra Florence" from 1594, the edition of Ptolemy's "Mode elementa" from 1604 and "Teatro del Cielo" from 1615. The most significant for the Croatian countries is his "Viaggio da Venetia a Constantinopoli" book with depictions of all major islands and ports on the way from Venice to Constantinople, which saw several editions from 1597 onwards.
