Summary
Giuseppe Rosaccio: Polla - Veduta Pula
Copper engraving
From the work: Viaggio da Venetia, a Costantinopoli : per mare, e per terra & insieme quello di Terra Santa, Venice, Giacomo Franco, 1598
This veduta shows Pula as an enchanted, compact city surrounded by walls on the sea side. The remains (ruins) of the Colosseum (Pula Arena), the Church of St. Mary of Premantura and the Orlando Tower are shown. The tower was used to monitor the open sea and communicate with other towers by smoke signals. In medieval terms, it is a relatively basic object, but for sailors entering the Gulf of Pula, it was the first sign of civilization.
