Summary
Dorothea Brand: Creative Writing
It's amazing that Dorothea Brand's book Creative Writing ever got out of print, and it's fortunate that today it's back in the spotlight it deserves. The basic problems of a writer, whether he is young or old, whether he is just starting out or has already published a lot, are no different today than they were in 1934, when the work "Creative Writing" was first published.
It does not face the problem of "the technique of writing literary works" - the basic theme of all creative writing courses - and since the basic problems are never mentioned in them, almost all creative writing courses are a failure for most people in most cases. The main problems of writers are personality problems: they can't start writing, or they start a story well, and then get discouraged, or they occasionally write well and the rest of the time poorly, or they write brilliantly, but after one excellent story or novel they can't write anymore, or they write brilliantly during the course of creative writing, but when it ends, they can't continue. The basic problems are, in other words, problems of trust, self-respect, freedom - that is, the writer's spirit-genius is often held captive by various ghosts of the unconscious. (From the preface)
