P. Kemp: Slovenian magic - Balkan cults

I prepared the book that I present to you with great interest and pleasure. I lived in Serbia for several years, traveling through parts of the Balkan peninsula inhabited by southern Slavs, all the way to the borders with Greece and Albania. Folk medicine, which I learned about on those trips, belongs to the Morava River valley in Serbia, eastern and central Bosnia, the Lim River valley, southern Dalmatia, parts of Montenegro and Macedonia.

During all that time I could notice many character traits and special customs of those peoples. One of the basic characteristics of people from these regions is their exceptional ability to adapt to various changes in living conditions at any time. Their vitality was mainly based on tradition, common sense and personal experience. Their life philosophy is perhaps best described by two typical sayings: "in trouble, the lame will play", or "it is better to feel sorry for someone than to have someone feel sorry for you". It is also typical that dying elders generally do not mourn, but prepare for the last act, just as a dead child is no longer mourned after another is born.

Most folk rituals, in one way or another, almost always have something to do with health. The disease shows the usual feelings towards the patient, from complete indifference to pity, which is characteristic of people living in difficult conditions ...

A doctor in these areas should be a person with a lot of tact. Previously, the patient, with a minimum of health education, could drink the medicine together with the paper in which it was wrapped. I also heard a story about a woman who drank a bottle of colorless, almost tasteless medicine and continued to drink water from it, thinking that there was water in it before. It is common for the patient to keep the rest of the medicine after recovery and give it to other family members in case they get sick, without first consulting a doctor. Prescribed recipes are worn as a talisman, put instead of plasters, and even swallowed with water.
