Summary
Harald Haarmann: Forgotten Civilizations
Our history books deal with vanished peoples and cultures mostly only when they are of interest for the political and cultural development of modern Europe. What supposedly or really did not leave a lasting mark on the history of Europe is often ignored or, at best, given the role of a mysterious stepchild and treated as a curiosity of cultural history. This book talks about 25 "outsider" cultures in the world, the oldest of which originates from the Paleolithic. Many of them will show that they really left a mark and that they changed the course of history, but that they were still forgotten, because the victors or later civilizations suppressed, silenced, erased and forbade the memory of them, and attributed their achievements to other cultures.
