Summary
Jean Starobinski: Jean-Jacques Rousseau: Transparency and Obstacle
And Seven Reflections on Rousseau
This book is not a biography, although in general terms, it respects the chronology of Rousseau's views and ideas. It is not a systematic presentation of the philosophy of the citizen of Geneva, although the essential problems of that philosophy are followed quite closely here. Rightly or wrongly, Rousseau did not agree to separate his own thought from his own individuality, his own theory from his own destiny. It should be received as it is given, in that fusion and dissolution of existence and idea.
