Summary

Sebastian Brod: The Ship of Fools

The Ship of Fools is a self-contained song that consists of about a hundred (some more or less, depending on the edition) chants/chapters dedicated to different forms of craziness/stupidity; at the time (the end of the 15th century) it was a "criticism of everything existing" in which no one, not even the Church, was spared. By "boarding" everyone and anyone who, in his opinion, deserved it, Brant achieves effects that are hard to find even today! As time goes on, it seems that Brant is speaking to us more and more, more powerfully and, most importantly, more and more convincing in terms of literature.
The special value of Brant's book is its artistic aspect – the woodcuts, the quality and originality of which is best told by the fact
that the hypothesis that they were made by the young Albrecht Dürer has not yet been fully rejected. Hieronimus Bosch's famous painting Ship of Madmen, here on the cover, dates between 1494 and 1510, so it can be assumed that Bosch also read Brant's book.
In the 20th century, the allegorical motif of the ship of madmen became extremely suitable for libertarian criticism, but also in pop culture - apart from the titles of numerous films and novels, it was especially reflected in rock music. Thus, the songs titled Ship of Fools were recorded by many musicians - first of all, we highlight the groups Doors and Grateful Dead (the most responsible for the idea to publish this edition of the Colorful Shop),
and let's also mention names such as: John Cale, Bob Seger, Robert Plant, Van der Graaf Generator, Soul Asylum, Echo & The Bunnymen, Residents...
Hardly, when Sebastian Brant had his Ship of Fools printed in Basel in 1494 (Das Narrenschiff), could hope for such longevity and success of his work. Be that as it may, his moral satire became the most successful literary work in the German language before the Reformation, while we waited for the Croatian version for, well, more than half a millennium... Today it is completely clear that Brant is a literary master and that his work is of timeless value.
There is no dispute about its relevance, because it would certainly not be too difficult to fill a new ship of lunatics with meritorious people from our immediate environment!
