Cecelia Ahern: If only you could see me
It was one Friday morning in June when Luke became my best friend. To be precise, it was at 9:15 in the morning, and I know exactly because I looked at my watch right then. I don't know why I did it, I was in no rush. But I think there is a reason for everything, and I may have looked at my watch so that I could tell my story accurately. And details are important in storytelling, right? I was glad to meet Luke that morning because leaving my previous best friend Barry had put me in a pretty bad mood. He couldn't see me anymore. But that doesn't really matter now because he's much happier now, and I think that's what matters. Leaving my best friends is part of my job. It's not a very nice part of the job, but since I try to find the positive side in everything, I find that leaving old best friends is the best opportunity to meet new best friends. And finding new friends is my favorite part of the job. That's probably why they offered me this job. We'll get to what my job actually is in a moment, but first I want to tell you what happened that morning when I met my best friend Luke. I closed the gate that led to the garden in front of Barry's house behind me and started walking and for absolutely no reason I first turned left, then right, then left again, then walked straight for a while, turned right again and ended up next to a housing estate called Fuchsia Lane. They must have called it that because there were fuchsias growing everywhere. They grew there as wild plants. Ah, excuse me, when I say "there" I mean the town of Baile na gCroithe in County Kerry. In Ireland. Baile na gCroithe is called Hartstown in English, but a direct translation from Irish would be Town of Hearts1. I think that sounds better...
