Summary

Nada Gašić: Four flames, ice

Tucked in a gray coat, under a warm gray cap, next to a gray wall, in a gray day, Martin passed through the West Gate and emerged into an open area where vineyards and bare orchards descend from the ramparts. He breathed in the clean air and went down to the place from which he could choose his path: he had already rejected the north and Medvednica full of witches, and glancing towards the south, he rejected the idea of going to Ilica, over which a persistent fog was forming from the smoke of the potleushki, which might not swallow him, but it would not hide him either. He chose the west and boldly went down the steep path used to descend the sledges on which the copernicus are driven to the bonfire. Four flames, ice, a novel by Nada Gašić, is a "winter" novel that begins in 1704 in Gradec. That year, the city's tax collector, Martin Eberle, listed the costs incurred by the city in torturing and burning women accused of witchcraft, embezzled something small, and then what he never dreamed of happened, which will continue in the second part, The Second Dreaming of the Novel, these years in Zagreb. In this novel, you will meet a gallery of about 50 characters, some of them, like Mrs. Adele and the policemen, we have already met in Nada Gašić's previous works, some characters are only brought to life by the author's fairy-tale imagination, for some, like the Big Gray Rat, we are not sure if they have a soul, while for some, like the Shadow of the Black Slider, we are not sure what their status is, but we know that they are warning the city that is in imminent danger and that the city is not afraid of it. In an all-time clash of perspectives, the voice of the always overshadowed, oppressed and mistreated female characters breaks through the frozen ice in the gutters of Zagreb's basements, melts away the layers of hypocrisy and greed that have formed a false metropolitan glow for centuries, and speaks clearly and unambiguously about the fate of a city. Four Flames, Ice is the magnificent, final part of Vivaldi's tetralogy by Nada Gašić, a novel composed of two dreams and four children's games, from which the waltz from The Nutcracker plays on the occasion of Advent. Nada Gašić is simply the Bulgakov of our time.
