Summary

Dublin Noir: Celtic Tiger vs Ugly American

edited by Bruen Ken

In the beginning it was quite clear - that Dublin storytellers were writing about their city... And then we turned the whole concept upside down, as is usually done when it comes to noir. The Irish are fascinated by how the world sees them, so let's take a look, we thought, at what this city looks like from the outside. With a few of us locals, let's try some of today's best crime stories from America, but also from Britain, Europe and Canada - successful ones, new ones and some in between. We knew we'd get a lot of Yeats and Ulysses, but what else are we left with...? The challenge we posed to the writers we invited to contribute to this collection was simple: Show us your Dublin, and do it in noir style. Tourists booking a holiday to Ireland inevitably visit Dublin first and always seem to end up in Temple Bar, our very own Times Square - full of filth, drugs, homeless people and wandering psychopaths. Two years ago, Pat Boran, the legendary director of the Dublin Arts Festival, invited me to give a literary performance in Temple Bar. During the performance, a woman dragged her by the legs. It cemented my noir reputation and definitely made me think twice before going there again. Temple Bar is, of course, mentioned in many of these stories, and the storytellers certainly note its noir side. The tourist board, which didn't like me even on the best of days, reacted by charging for my head. I take that as a compliment, I guess.
