Della Casa Giovanni

Summary

Giovanni Della Casa: Galateo or manners

Giovanni Della Casa (1503 – 1556), Italian writer and church dignitary, is best remembered as the author of Galatea, a treatise on polite behavior, a kind of collection of advice and rules for all time. Although it is a practical manual of etiquette and morals written without literary pretensions, within the framework of secular interest, the author's enlightenment, shrewdness and "unbearable lightness" of expression are noticeable. His command of the language and refined understanding of things and people is enviable, although in his "Renaissance etiquette" he deals with ordinary topics such as polite conversations, dress codes or table manners. The writer advocates polite behavior and complete correctness towards others, as well as respect for established rules of life and fundamental values of society. The book became a bestseller immediately after its publication and has remained a favorite read and translated (this edition is a confirmation) for almost six centuries, and the harmonious flow of thought, as well as the gentleness of the approach, did not go unnoticed even by top judges. Thus, Giacomo Leopardi placed Della Casa alongside Machiavelli as a master of the Italian prose style, writing that his text is "one of the most elegant and classic prose of the sixteenth century".
