Summary
Alphonse de Lamartine: Graziella
Young Lamartine traveled to Italy in 1812. First to Rome, and then to Naples with his friend from aristocratic circles, in order to experience the rusticity of fishing life firsthand. There he meets the granddaughter of an Italian fisherman, Graziella. Although it is love at first sight, it is unthinkable that romantic love between two young people will result in marriage, mostly due to social differences. "Graziella" is a sentimental portrait of growing up, a melancholic journey across the Mediterranean, a testimony to the social conventions of the 19th century and one of the masterpieces of French romanticism, adapted several times for film and theater.
