Summary
Lawrence Durrell: Justina
Alexandrian Quartet
In The Alexandria Quartet, Durrell created a whole world imbued with sensual and luxurious style, composed of four novelistic units: Justina (1957), Balthazar (1958), Mauntoliv (1958) and Klea. (1960).
This first novel of an unforgettable tetralogy takes place on the eve of World War II. The place of events is Alexandria, an Egyptian city that once had the largest library in the world, and whose inhabitants were in constant search for different knowledge. But the obsessive characters of this hypnotizing novel, the search for the truth only drags them into fatal boredom in which everyone wants to know - and possess - the other. Since its publication in 1957, Justina has acquired a literal cult status among many readers.
"Darel is probably one of the best writers of our time... His sensual, powerful style is unique in today's literature.... A spontaneous, rich beauty that any sensitive reader will surely fall in love with."
