Summary

Bojan Ljubenović: Father

A novel about heroes, impossible loves and complicated relationships between fathers and sons It is not easy to admit to yourself that you are stupid. Here, for example, is my case. I graduated college, live in a spacious apartment and have a well-paid job in the state administration. Some would say I'm smart. And I didn't. Every move I've made in my life proves that I'm dumb as night. Like a night in a tunnel, to be exact. Instead of being in London, here I am in Belgrade. The most wonderful girl in the world proposed to me, and I turned her down. I occasionally snort cocaine. I save the lives of people who don't want to live. It can hardly be more stupid than that. An exciting, witty and deeply emotional story about the collapse of a great state, but above all a dynamic story about Đorđe Kovač, a forty-year-old man whose life is turned upside down when, on an ordinary day, an unknown man in a coat and a cap rings his doorbell. Đorđe is a psychologist employed by the police, a spoiled brat who got everything in life at the expense of his father's victims, a lazy man prone to vices, a man who betrayed his best friend, a liar and a manipulator. However, he manages to prove that an anti-hero can do good deeds and repair the damage he has caused. On the way from Trieste via Belgrade to London and back, Ljubenović, like landmines, sowed many truths that will explode right in front of the attentive reader's face, often leaving him breathless. Everything that happens in the novel causes a dilemma for the reader whether to laugh first and then cry or vice versa.
