Lear Edward

Summary

Edward Lear: The Book of Nonsense

What is nonsense and what is meaning, the question is now? Namely, we witness every day how close and increasingly similar these two opposite concepts are. But still, at least theoretically, meaninglessness should be in conflict with the meaning and harmony of life, because while meaning is mostly prosaic and common, meaninglessness is not just its mere negation, but rather, "let's say", the potentiation of (dis)harmony in life through its contradictions. If this attempt to theorize sounds a bit philosophical, let's mention that Aristotle was still researching the philosophy of laughter and even then nonsense was considered in a very meaningful way. In addition to everyday life, nonsense found its highest expression, i.e. meaning, in art, especially in poetry and prose, and Edward Lear was among the first to honor it and give it its due place. He gave the scope of "nonsense" to every topic, carving or encasing it with his perfectly meaningless treatment. These illustrated poems and cartoons - full of made-up names, unusual places, strange creatures and silly ideas - are an exceptional product of the imagination of a wacky genius whose pen created a unique literary genre characterized by, as he liked to say, "pure and absolute nonsense".
Lear loved to play with words and with children, read and show them his works and "watch how that little people rejoiced". His first book was published in 1846 under the title Knjiga besmislica (A Book of Nonsense); it was in the time of realism, when children's books were focused on moral lessons about behavior, and adults read thick adventure or profound novels, and it was a real discovery!
And it is still like that today, after almost two centuries, when the timeless nonsense of Edward Lear is revealed again to the Croatian readership in the unrevealing translation of Mate Maras!
