Summary
Kalman Mesarić: Cosmic jugglers. Man does not want to die!
Two avant-garde-expressionist dramas by Ka(lman) Mesarić, written in the early 20s of the last century with their scenic means and angry criticism of social and ethical relations, have not lost their relevance even to this day. On the contrary! Linking in them elements of cabaret, variety show and circus with elements of theatricalization, Kalman Mesarić seems to be writing within contemporary theater trends. The drama Cosmic jugglers - burlesque theater in 3 briefcases, Mesarić's first dramatic work, is a disturbing expressionist grotesque about universal themes and absurd civic morality, a drama in which the characters are newly revived symbols. Even more aggressive and powerful is the drama The Man Will Not Die, a work completely unknown to this day, which is being published for the first time in this edition. It is a bravura expressionist treatment of a well-known medieval theme, namely the seven deadly sins, in the manner of old church depictions. The fantasy presented in the forms of allegory and morality serves Mesarić only to highlight the basic idea of the work: the meaning of life is - death.
