Summary
Bart Van Loo: Burgundy
This is a book about power-loving and honor-loving nobles, their betrayals, fratricide, arranged marriages and magnificent weddings, the cruel battles they fought, the luxury they lived in, the madness from which some of them suffered; about fraud, the fall of knightly ideals and the awakening of individualism, about the rise of cities, the struggle for supremacy in the heart of Europe and bloody, sometimes insane military campaigns, brilliant victories and shameful defeats. It is also an outstanding cultural history of architecture, literature, music and, especially, painting in medieval Europe. The wonderful works of the Dutch sculptor Klaus Slutter (14th century) and famous painters such as Jan van Eyck, Rohir van der Weyden, Hugo van der Huss, created on the soil of the former Burgundy, cause great admiration even today.
