Summary
Afonso Cruz: We will buy a poet
We will buy a poet is written in Cruz's recognizable style: witty, simple, yet deep and important. In this short piece of his, Cruz creates a dystopia in which absolutely everything can be measured by money and money is the measure of all things, so the heroes of his novel use proverbs like don't pull my wallet and you're not creditworthy. In the world of the work We will buy a poet, there is only one rule - for what there is a supply, there is also a demand, and everything that is not commercial, is not at all. But what kind of world would it be that could not be destroyed by a little good poetry? So a little girl in a rather traditional family wishes a poet for her birthday. A good, economically successful and persistent father, of course, generously allows his favorite such a whim, and the two of them go to the supermarket to choose the poet who would best suit their needs. At first, the poet seems silly and harmless, but his subtle influence soon begins to spill over to the whole family and unimaginable things begin to happen - the brother recites a poem to the girl he likes, the little girl becomes interested in useless things, the mother begins to reflect on her relationship in the family... This short novel, in the author's own manner, opens a series of important questions about why we need poetry, and art in general. Moreover, one of the conclusions that emerges through the novel is that art is simply inevitable. Not long after the publication of the book in Portugal, a children's musical was made based on the novel, in the production of which the author participated.
