Summary
Jaroslav Hašek: Love in Međimurje
Stories from Croatia and the surrounding area
Czech classic Jaroslav Hašek gained world fame with his hilarious novel Experiences of the good soldier Švejk set in the World War in which he destroys the powerful war machine and the endlessly bureaucratized system with humor and satire, pointing to human stupidity as the most stubborn constant in the history of mankind. Švejk's recognizable mockery of institutions and seemingly unquestionable authorities is also encountered in the selection of short stories, cartoons and humor included in Ljubav u Međimurje, created in the period between 1904 and 1914. Around that time, Hašek turned his vagabond helm towards the Croatian north and allegedly wandered through Međimurje, Podravina and around Varaždin, near the Drava and Mura rivers, to end up in Pula and Trieste.
Researching available sources in the Czech Republic and Croatia, old newspapers and substantial literature about Hašek, as well as numerous editions of his books, Matija Ivačić prepared this unique selection of Hašek's "wandering prose" set in Croatia and neighboring countries, connected by the Austro-Hungarian historical, political and cultural context.
The collected »Stories from Croatia and the surrounding area« will be especially interesting to readers who will literally read their own domicile locations such as Donja Dubrava, Varaždin, Štefanac, Šemovac, Zamlaka, Vrbanovec, Sudovčina and other Međimurje, Podravina, Zagorje, as well as Dalmatian and Bosnia-Herzegovina locations.
