Summary
Khaled Hosseini: Dragon Hunter | A thousand wonderful suns | And the mountains echoed
Three novels in one book.
After the publication of his first novel The Dragon Hunter, Khaled Hosseini became a kind of literary miracle and won the hearts of millions of readers. The main theme of his novels is family, so the stories he tells us are universally interesting. On the other hand, we are talking about Afghan families, and in the cultural and historical context, their fate is specific. While the novel Dragon Hunter deals with the role of men in the family and Afghan society, the novel A Thousand Wonderful Suns is dedicated to Afghan mothers and women. The third novel, And the mountains echoed, describes the relationship between a brother and sister in a family that had to be separated in order to survive.
The choice of such a theme for his literary works is explained by the author himself with the words: "This is mainly because I think that all the great themes of life, all human themes can be found within family stories - love, sadness, conflict, duty, sacrifice... And yet, they play out differently from family to family, and each has its own structure, dynamics and incendiary contradictions, no matter how much they are based on love. And so there are endless variations on the theme. For me, families are puzzles that take a lifetime to solve - often unsuccessfully - and I like to explore how people in them try to connect, through love, duty or circumstances." The reality he writes about is harsh and painful, but even when he depicts a wounded country and people whose destinies are shrouded in sadness, he awakens in us exceptional empathy and a sense of catharsis.
