Summary
Mihail Ljermontov: Maskerata
Maskerata is drama by Russian writer Mihail Ljermontova written in 1835. It is partly inspired by Shakespeare's Othello, and partly by real events in Saint Petersburg high society. It consists of four acts. The protagonist is a nobleman named Arbenjin who, together with his friend, Prince Zvjezdić, goes to a masquerade ball where he witnesses Zvjezdić flirting with a masked baroness, a friend of his wife Nina. The plot shows how he becomes convinced that the baroness is actually Nina, that is, that she is cheating with Zvezdić, and decides to poison her. Lermontov wrote several versions of the text, since none of them wanted to be approved by the then tsarist censorship.
