Vladimir Visocki is one of the most brilliant and charismatic figures of Russian cultural life from the Soviet period.
During his short life he was involved in art in many ways - he acted in theater and film, wrote poetry and was a singer-songwriter. For his work in these areas, he received wide, truly universal recognition and love. Of course, Visocki was primarily known as a poet and performer of his own songs, and the Russian people adored him. Regardless of the fact that precisely this part of his creativity was never officially recognized, the national recognition was so great that even rigid official restrictions fell in front of him.
If one tries to explain why his creativity so enchanted the Russian people, it should be pointed out that in the person of Vladimir Visocki, all the qualities, aspirations, but also contradictions of Soviet society and national and regional differences came together, were embodied in him.
For a long time, Vladimir Visocki's work was hidden from the Croatian reading public, and therefore every lover of literature is particularly pleased that before us is a selection from the poetry of that Russian great, poet, singer-songwriter and actor, who gained world fame not only in Soviet Russia but also throughout the world.
During his lifetime, the poems of Vladimir Visocki, an icon of post-Stalinist culture, were almost never published. The book Nerv was published posthumously (1981) and marked the beginning of his official recognition. Since 1990, several dozen volumes of collected works of poetry and prose by Vladimir Visocki have been published in Russia. Contemporary Russian criticism places him alongside Josif Aleksandrovich Brodski.
